If you, your employees or their dependents don’t understand the fundamentals of US healthcare, then they won’t understand the choices they face and they are virtually guaranteed to make mistakes that result in higher costs and worse outcomes.
Check out our blog series about health literacy to hear our perspective.
There are many options for getting your team the educational materials they need, including some that we produce and can customize for your business.
I have been in the healthcare industry for more than 20 years and I can attest to its complexity. But don't just take my word for it. It can confound even the smartest people - like an economist.
The following "An Arm and a Leg" podcast from November 2018 includes an interview with economist & Carnegie-Mellon University professor George Loewenstein who co-authored a study about making health insurance choices (conclusion: it's hard!)
During the interview (which starts around the 1 minute 14 second mark), professor Loewenstein acknowledged the complicated nature of health insurance. He even said he was dreading the thought of having to help his then 26-year-old son pick one.
A funny, light-hearted commentary about an important benefit that covers almost half of the U.S. population. Definitely worth a listen in its entirety.
